Sail Aboard the Historic *VIM*
at Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez
The 1939 sailing yacht Vim (US-15) is a notable vessel in the history of 12 Metre class racing yachts. Designed by the renowned naval architect Olin J. Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens and built by Henry B. Nevins, Vim was originally commissioned by the prominent yachtsman Harold S. Vanderbilt.
Vim was constructed under the International Third Rule, a set of guidelines for 12 Metre class racing yachts. She has an overall length of 21.18 meters, a beam of 3.66 meters, and a draft of 2.67 meters. Her sail area is 179 square meters, and she displaces 27.44 tons. The yacht was built using wood with double planking, a common construction method for racing yachts of that era.
In her early years, Vim demonstrated exceptional performance. She was particularly noted for her dominance on the upwind leg due to her advanced grinder/winch setup, which allowed for rapid tacking. She was considered one of the fastest and most competitive 12-metre yachts of her time. During the 1939 races, Vim was narrowly beaten by the yacht Jenetta on one occasion, highlighting her competitive edge.

What is the history of classic yacht Vim?
Vim was commissioned by Harold S. Vanderbilt and launched in 1939. Designed by Olin J. Stephens and built by Henry B. Nevins, Inc., Vim was intended to dominate the highly competitive 12-metre class racing, particularly the America’s Cup and other prestigious regattas. Vanderbilt, a key figure in competitive sailing, sought to leverage Vim’s advanced design and technology for a competitive edge. The yacht was built to International Third Rule specifications and featured innovative elements that made her exceptionally fast and agile.
One of the pioneering features of Vim was her grinder/winch system, which allowed for rapid tacking and superior upwind performance. Her exceptional speed and agility were showcased during the 1939 racing season, where she competed against other top yachts of her time, including the noteworthy Jenetta, which managed to narrowly beat Vim by only two seconds in a 27nm race.
The story of Jenetta, designed by the famous Scottish designer Alfred Mylne and launched in 1939, is another fascinating chapter in the history of 12-meter class yachts. Decades after her glory days, Jenetta was found in a state of neglect, half-submerged and forgotten in a quiet harbour. A group of passionate maritime historians stumbled upon her while researching classic yachts. Recognizing Jenetta’s historical significance, they embarked on a mission to restore her to her former glory.
Returning to the 1939 racing season, Vim’s dominance on the racecourse was largely attributed to Vanderbilt’s extraordinary sailing skills and the yacht’s innovative design. In 1958, Vim participated in the America’s Cup trials, further cementing her place in yachting history. Although she did not win, her performance was highly respected and contributed to the competitive spirit of the event.
After her participation in the 1958 America’s Cup trials, Vim continued to be actively involved in various regattas and races. She sailed extensively in both the United States and Europe, participating in numerous prestigious events. Over the years, Vim underwent several restorations to maintain her racing condition and preserve her historical integrity. She remained a competitive yacht within the 12-metre class. In recent years, Vim has been sailing in the Mediterranean, including participating in the Voiles de Saint-Tropez, showcasing her enduring legacy and performance.
