legendary america's cup yacht

French Kiss

The racer FRENCH KISS is notable for its participation in the America’s Cup, a prestigious yacht race that has a rich history dating back to 1851. The America’s Cup is considered the oldest international sporting trophy, and it has been a platform for sailing innovation and intense international competition for over a century.

FRENCH KISS competed in the 1987 America’s Cup held in Fremantle, Australia. This event was particularly memorable for the strong winds and challenging sea conditions that tested the design and sailing capabilities of the competing yachts. The 1987 America’s Cup was also significant for being one of the last to feature 12-metre class yachts, a class that had been synonymous with the America’s Cup since 1958.

The French Kiss campaign was led by French sailor Marc Pajot, who had previously competed in the America’s Cup and was a well-respected figure in the sailing world. The team behind FRENCH KISS was a mix of French maritime talent, including designers, engineers, and professional sailors, who all contributed to the yacht’s innovative design and campaign strategy.

Despite facing stiff competition from the defending American team and other international challengers, FRENCH KISS performed admirably, showcasing the skill of its crew and the design qualities of the yacht. The French team’s efforts were seen as a significant achievement, especially considering the resources and historical dominance of the more established teams.

While FRENCH KISS did not win the America’s Cup, its participation in the 1987 event left a lasting legacy. The campaign demonstrated the competitive spirit and innovation of French sailing, contributing to the country’s strong reputation in the sport. The story of FRENCH KISS is remembered as an inspiring chapter in the history of the America’s Cup, highlighting the global nature of the competition and the relentless pursuit of excellence in the sport of sailing.

Innovative Legacy

FRENCH KISS, a famous yacht that competed in the 1987 America’s Cup, is celebrated for its innovative design and competitive spirit. While much is known about its participation in the iconic race, a lesser-known fact is its role in advancing yacht technology and design.

The team behind FRENCH KISS was pivotal in introducing cutting-edge materials and sail technologies, which not only enhanced its performance but also influenced future yacht construction standards. This legacy of innovation extends beyond its race achievements, making FRENCH KISS a symbol of technological advancement in the sailing world.

South Australia

SOUTH AUSTRALIA was one of the challengers designed and built to compete in the 1987 America’s Cup held off the coast of Fremantle, Western Australia. This event was notable for many reasons, including the introduction of the 12-metre class yachts, which had been the standard since 1958, and for being one of the most competitive and technologically advanced Cups of its time.

The 1987 America’s Cup marked a significant shift in the competition, both in terms of the venue and the international participation it attracted. For the first time, the Cup was defended outside the United States, in the waters of Fremantle, Australia, after the Australian II’s historic win in 1983 ended the New York Yacht Club’s 132-year winning streak, the longest in sports history.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA was part of an Australian defense effort that saw multiple yachts being designed and built to defend the Cup on home waters. The yacht represented the State of South Australia and was backed by a consortium that aimed to bring the Cup to South Australia if successful. Like her contemporaries, SOUTH AUSTRALIA was the product of significant research and development, incorporating the latest in yacht design technology, materials science, and sailing strategy of the time.

The design of SOUTH AUSTRALIA and its campaign reflected the intense national and state pride in Australia surrounding the America’s Cup. The event itself was a catalyst for significant economic and infrastructural development in Fremantle and helped to put Australian yachting and its associated industries on the world stage. Despite the innovative designs and the high hopes of its backers, SOUTH AUSTRALIA did not win the Cup. The competition was fierce, with the eventual winner being the American yacht STARS & STRIPES ’87, skippered by Dennis Conner, which successfully reclaimed the Cup for the San Diego Yacht Club.

The 1987 America’s Cup is remembered for its spirit of international competition, the technological leaps in yacht design it fostered, and the way it showcased the sport of sailing to a global audience. The story of SOUTH AUSTRALIA is part of this larger narrative, highlighting the dedication and innovation of teams from around the world in their pursuit of the oldest trophy in international sport.

Technological Marvel

SOUTH AUSTRALIA, a contender in the 1987 America’s Cup, epitomized the apex of yacht design and national aspiration. Representing South Australia, she was engineered with pioneering technology, utilizing advanced materials such as carbon fibre and kevlar to enhance performance. Amidst the intense rivalry and the demanding seas off Fremantle, she faced formidable opponents, including the victorious STARS & STRIPES ’87.

Though she didn’t win, SOUTH AUSTRALIA left an indelible mark on the sailing world, showcasing the spirit of innovation and the relentless pursuit of excellence that define the America’s Cup. Her legacy continues to influence yacht design and inspires sailors globally.

Understanding the 12 Metre Class Yachts

The Stars of the 1987 America's Cup

The 12 Metre Class yachts, often abbreviated as 12mR or 12 MJI, played a pivotal role in one of sailing’s most prestigious competitions, the America’s Cup, especially noted in the 1987 event held off Fremantle, Western Australia. But what exactly is the 12 Metre Class, and why was it so significant in the world of competitive sailing? Let’s dive into an accessible explanation that demystifies these legendary yachts for everyone.

The Essence of the 12 Metre Class
Firstly, the term “12 Metre” does not refer to the length of the yacht, which is a common misconception. Instead, it relates to a formula, developed in 1907, that determines the eligibility of a yacht for this class. This formula takes into account various dimensions of the yacht, including length, sail area, and displacement (the weight of the water displaced by the yacht’s hull), to produce a value that must not exceed 12 metres. The result is a range of yachts, typically 65 to 75 feet in length, designed within a specific set of constraints to ensure fair competition.

The Role in the America’s Cup
From 1958 to 1987, the 12 Metre Class yachts were the standard for the America’s Cup, the oldest international sporting trophy. This era is often celebrated for its blend of tradition and innovation, as yacht designers pushed the boundaries of materials, design, and sailing tactics within the strict limits of the 12 Metre rule. The goal was to create a yacht that was fast, agile, responsive, and capable of handling the demanding conditions of match racing.

The 1987 America’s Cup
The 1987 America’s Cup, held in Fremantle, is particularly remembered for its fierce competition and the technological advancements it spurred in yacht design. The challenging conditions of the Indian Ocean tested the 12 Metre yachts like never before, highlighting the importance of design innovation, crew skill, and tactical prowess.

Design and Innovation
Designing a 12 Metre Class yacht was as much an art as it was a science. Designers had to meticulously balance the equation of the rule, optimizing each element of the yacht’s design to gain speed without exceeding the class limit. This led to innovative hull shapes, keel designs, and rigging techniques that significantly influenced yacht design beyond the America’s Cup.

Legacy and Impact
The 12 Metre Class yachts left a lasting legacy on the America’s Cup and the world of sailing. They embodied the spirit of competition, innovation, and international camaraderie. The class helped to standardize yacht racing and contributed to the professionalization of the sport, setting the stage for the high-tech racing seen in today’s America’s Cup.

12 Metre Legacy: Sailing’s Golden Era
Though the America’s Cup moved on to other classes after 1987, the 12 Metre yachts continue to be celebrated and raced in regattas dedicated to preserving their heritage. They represent a golden era of sailing where design, technology, and skill intersected to create some of the most exciting races in the history of the sport.
